Makeshift Company: The core of Makeshift Company is the artistic work of dancer Emma Lister and circus artist Sakari Männistö. With decades of creative experience and knowledge between them, they aim to tell stories through combining dance, circus and a broad range of collaborators from the performing and visual arts.
Sakari Männistö Immersed in the world of circus from a young age, Sakari started juggling at 13 and soon began devising his own shows. He studied under the tutelage of Arcadi Poupon, Maksim Komaro, Denis Paumier and Jay Gillian. Throughout his career Sakari has been involved as a performer and director in over 40 different circus performances with companies such as Agit-Cirk (Tenho, Saivo at Kiasma Helsinki, JONG with Avanti! Orchestra), Circo Aereo (Ro-Pu, Motet) and Gandini Juggling (Motet, Smashed and 4x4: Ephemeral Architectures). He has performed throughout Finland, Central Europe, Russia, Canada and the USA. Sakari has also taught master class workshops at ENC Montréal, Lille-Lomme, Berlin Katakomben and National Centre for Circus Arts (London). Apart from his performing and teaching work, Sakari is also a founding Artistic Director of Agit-Cirk and the Silence Festival in Lapland (2010-2014 & 2016) and London (2018). www.sakarimannisto.fi www.agitcirk.com Emma Lister Emma trained at Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School where she performed many of the full-length classics as well as repertoire by George Balanchine, Hans Van Manen, Mark Godden and John Neumeier. Since moving to England, Emma has danced with English National Ballet, The National Ballet of Ireland and English Youth Ballet where she was a principal artist for 10 years, dancing all the major classical ballet leads (Giselle, Swan Lake, Nutcracker etc.). Her guesting work has taken her from Alaska to Buckingham Palace, Bermuda, Malta and Lapland. Her rehearsal director/choreographic assistant work includes London’s ICON Dance, The National Ballet of Ireland, Ludovic Ondiviela, Gandini Juggling and both Kirill Burlov and Hubert Essakow at The Print Room. Emma has also worked as artistic coordinator for the mixed arts festival Baltic Art Form since its inaugural year, and is currently completing a BA in Humanities at the Open University.
